I am saddened when I hear people telling others they can be saved without repenting. I’m sure they don’t REALIZE that’s what they’re saying, but by leaving out repentance, that’s what they’re implying.  Romans 10:9 is preached alone, excluding the rest of God’s Word . . .

‘That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.’

Yes, this is an integral PART of conversion–if you don’t believe that Jesus paid the price for your sins, then you can not be saved.  There IS only one way, and one mediator between God and men:  Jesus Christ.

But Jesus himself taught that we must repent:

‘From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, REPENT: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ‘  (Matthew 4:17)

‘And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but, EXCEPT YE REPENT, ye shall all likewise perish.  Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, EXCEPT YE REPENT, ye shall all likewise perish.’  (Luke 13:2-5)

Jesus sent out the disciples two by two

‘And they went out, and preached that men should REPENT.’  (Mark 6:12)

Jesus didn’t go around saying ‘believe in me and you shall be saved’.  Neither did the disciples say ‘believe in Jesus and you shall be saved’.  They said ‘repent’.  The disciples and early church continued to preach repentance:

‘Then Peter said unto them, REPENT, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.’  (Acts 2:38)

‘REPENT ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;’  (Acts 3:19)

‘And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to REPENT:’  (Acts 17:30)

‘But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and [then] to the Gentiles, that they should REPENT and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.’  (Acts 26:20)

The reason I’m harping on this, is that the churches now, for the most part, don’t preach repentance.  We don’t have a bunch of ‘carnal Christians’ in the churches . . . we  have a bunch of people that have never been completely converted! When we believe, we’re as saved as demons–in other words, we’re NOT!  (Maybe that’s why so many so-called ‘Christians’ live like the devil.)

‘Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.’  (James 2:19

There is more to being converted than just believing.  Believing is only the first step.  ‘After that, we must ‘repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.’

I hope you’ll give this thought, prayer, and study.  If we preach a gospel that doesn’t include repentance, we’re preaching ‘another gospel’ and that is a VERY serious thing! The penalty for preaching a false gospel is just as serious as the penalty for adding to, or taking away from, God’s Word.

‘But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be ACCURSED.  As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be ACCURSED.’  (Galatians 1:8-9)

If that’s what you’ve been doing, it’s probably because that’s what you were taught–but now you know . . . DON’T do it anymore!  Repent and seek forgiveness–and pray for those you may have unintentionally misled.
