There are two powerful forces at odds today: the antichrist spirit of lawlessness, and the Holy Spirit.  The whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one–even, unfortunately, most of what professes to be ‘The Church’ in the developed world.

If you will examine what lies at the heart of many of the skirmishes, you will see it is rebellion against God’s authority and God’s Law.  Some of the battles are even specifically about removing the Ten Commandments from public places.

The Greek word for lawlessness is ‘anomia’ G458

1) the condition of without law
..a) because ignorant of it
..b) because of violating it
2) contempt and violation of law, iniquity, wickedness

In Greek, ‘law’ is: nomos and ‘without’ is: a-.  Therefore, to express the idea of what we would call ‘lawlessness’, there is no more perfect way to express it in Greek than by the word: ‘anomos’ or ‘anomia’.  Certainly, lawbreaking can also be called wickedness, evil, or sin, but the most perfect translation of the word is ‘lawless’ or ‘lawlessness’.

Where does this word show up in the Bible?  In some very key places:

‘Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (ANOMIA).’  (Matt. 7:22-23)

Interesting–many people that call Jesus Lord and do wonderful works in His name . . . yet practice lawlessness . . . will be rejected on judgment day.  Keep this one in mind.

‘As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity (ANOMIA); And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.’  (Matt. 13:40-42)

Wow, here it is again already . . . tares growing amongst the wheat . . . children of the wicked one amongst the children of God.  He will send His angels to gather all those children of the wicked one, who practice LAWLESSNESS, and they will be cast into a furnace of fire.

‘Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity (ANOMIA)’ (Matt. 23:38)

Another description of the tares.  I’ve seen a lot of those, professing to be ‘Christians’.  It could be why ‘Christianity’ stinks to so many nonbelievers.  After all, today’s mainstream, western ‘Christian’ arrogantly calls sinners ‘sinners’ and tells them they are going to burn in hell . . . yet preaches a gospel that says that the children of God can live any way they please (ANOMIA).

‘And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.  And because iniquity (ANOMIA) shall abound , the love of many shall wax cold .’  (Matt. 24:10-12)

When we start looking specifically at ‘lawlessness’ (as opposed to ‘sin’ or ‘wickedness’) a lot of our key end-times Scriptures pop up, don’t they?  The significance of lawlessness has been hidden in the translations.

‘I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity (ANOMIA) unto iniquity (ANOMIA); even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness’  (Romans 6:19)

As Christians, we are NOT to be lawless people!

‘Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness(ANOMIA)? and what communion hath light with darkness?’  (2 Cor. 6:14)

How can we even claim to be Christians, if we walk in lawlessness?  According to this verse, righteousness has nothing in common with lawlessness.

‘For the mystery of iniquity (ANOMIA) doth already work : only he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way.’  (2 Thess. 2:7)

In this verse, there are no Greek words saying ‘he’ or ‘who’.  It could just as easily be translated as ‘that which’ . . . ‘only that which now letteth’.  What restrains lawlessness?  The law–if people choose to, or are compelled to, obey it.  Which leads us to another end-times passage:

‘Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, [saying], Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.’  (Psalms 2:1-3)

In the end-times, the unsaved world rebels against the Lord and conspires together to cast off His ‘bands and cords’ . . . His restraints . . . His law and moral values . . . which constrain them.  ‘Do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.’  (Allistair Crowley, a famed Satanist and homosexual serial-killer pedophile who called himself ‘the beast’)

This one is a little harder to understand the translation, so I will include the Greek for comparison:

‘Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth (ANOMIA) also the law (ANOMIA) for sin is the transgression of the law (ANOMIA) .’  (1 John 3:4)

‘paV o poiwn thn amartian kai thn anomian poiei kai h amartia estin h anomia’

To use the exact translation of ‘lawlessness’, I would translate it this way:

‘Whosoever committeth sin also lawlessness (ANOMIA) commits, for sin is lawlessness (ANOMIA).’

There is simply no excuse for a Christian to live a sinful lifestyle!!  To live a sinful lifestyle, under the guise of being ‘covered in Christ’s righteousness’ or our actions being ‘under the blood’ is to blaspheme Christ!  The Scriptures tell us that Jesus hated LAWLESSNESS!

‘But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and HATED iniquity (ANOMIA) . . . ‘  (Hebrews 1:8-9)

And that He specifically redeemed us FROM lawlessness, to walk in righteousness!

‘Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity (ANOMIA), and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.’  (Titus 2:14)

Here is a passage that is frequently twisted to justify a Christian being ‘carnal’ (lawless) . . .

‘And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are without law (ANOMOS), as without law (ANOMOS), (being not without law (ANOMOS) to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law (ANOMOS)’  (1 Cor. 9:20-21)

I am not sure how Paul accomplished that–but he says he was NOT without law towards God, but under the law to Christ. I suspect he meant that he lived by the SPIRIT of the Law, but not the LETTER of the Law, in those cases–which is how Gentile Christians are to walk, even now.  In no way does this justify a Christian living without regard for the SPIRIT of the Law and being lawless (ANOMOS)!

Here’s another end-times one, about the Antichrist:

‘And then shall that Wicked (ANOMOS) be revealed , whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:’ (2 Thess. 2:8)

And lastly . . . as many of us can empathize with:

‘And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed [his] righteous soul from day to day with [their] unlawful (ANOMOS) deeds’  (2 Peter 2:7-8)

I have cited 13 of 20 verses that use this word.  That’s 65% of the places where it occurs–and they have significant end-times application!  There are many other places where ‘iniquity’ or ‘wickedness’ are spoken of . . . and many where ‘sin’ is talked about.  (And, as 1 John 3:4 tells us, ALL sin is lawlessness (anomia).)  However, I believe there is a very specific reason that the words ‘anomia’ and ‘anomos’ were used in these passages.  I think when we look around us, we can see why.

We are now living in a time that is not only exceedingly sinful, but a hatred for (righteous) law . . . a rebellion against God’s righteous law . . . is becoming pervasive throughout the world.  This hatred for God’s righteous law is so pointed and specific that it requires very precise wording to convey it.  It is not simply transgression of God’s law–it is REBELLION against it.

It should be no surprise to us that our president specifically chose people who did not pay their taxes to fill positions in his administration . . . or that he chooses to surround himself and give power and prestige to those who display a clear hatred for God’s law . . . or that he is ‘framing mischief by a law’ (changing the laws to legalize sin) and penalizing righteousness.  He is a man of LAWLESSNESS.  He operates in the antichrist spirit of ANOMIA.

It isn’t ‘law’ per se that this spirit opposes, because it does indeed seek to bring everyone into bondage through the Law of Sin and Death.  It comes to steal, kill, and destroy–and apparently to tightly control, to compel people to sin and to approve of sin, and to persecute those who won’t.  It is God’s RIGHTEOUS law that this spirit opposes.  It ‘opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped’.

‘And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.’  (Rev. 12:17)

There is no doubt that we are in the midst of a spiritual war.  What are we to do?

‘Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.’  (Rev. 14:12)

We must stand firm in our resolve.  We must uphold the SPIRIT of God’s law, and keep His commandments, through love and obedience.  We must resist the devil.  And we must trust in our Lord, that the day of judgment IS coming, when He will reward the righteous and destroy the lawless.

‘Who will rise up for me against the transgressors? or who will stand up with me against the workers of iniquity (ANOMIA)? If the Lord had not helped me, my soul had almost sojourned in Hades.  If I said, My foot has been moved; thy mercy, O Lord, helped me. O Lord, according to the multitude of my griefs within my heart, thy consolation have soothed my soul.

Shall the throne of iniquity (ANOMIA) have fellowship with thee, which frames mischief by an ordinance? They will hunt for the soul of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood. But the Lord was my refuge; and my God the helper of my hope. And he will recompense to them their iniquity (ANOMIA) and their wickedness: the Lord our God shall utterly destroy them.’  (Psalm 94:16-23, Greek Septuagint)

‘Woe to them that call evil good, and good evil; who make darkness light, and light darkness; who make bitter sweet, and sweet bitter. Woe to them that are wise in their own conceit, and knowing in their own sight.  Woe to the strong ones of you that drink wine, and the mighty ones that mingle strong drink:  who justify the ungodly for rewards, and take away the righteousness of the righteous.

Therefore as stubble shall be burnt by a coal of fire, and shall be consumed by a violent flame, their root shall be as chaff, and their flower shall go up as dust: for they rejected the law of the Lord of hosts, and insulted the word of the Holy One of Israel.’  (Isaiah 5:20-24, Greek Septuagint)

(For those of you who have not read my other posts, I am NOT involved with the Hebrew Roots movement, and I do NOT believe we are supposed to follow ‘Torah’ (go back under The Law).  I believe we are to follow the Ten Commandments, as OBEDIENCE to God, and EVIDENCE of our commitment to HIm–but NOT for JUSTIFICATION.  We are to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who will lead us to follow the SPIRIT of the Law, rather than the LETTER of the Law.)
