Tag Archive: falling away

‘Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away* first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition’ (2 Thess. 2:3)

If you have been told that this word REALLY means ‘catching away’, rather than ‘falling away’, you have been lied to.

1. The Greek word is ‘apostasia’ (you already know what ‘apostasy’ means in English, right?). This word is a compound word (which are common in Greek) and can be broken into two Greek words: ‘apo‘ and ‘stasis‘. ‘Apo’ means: away from. ‘Stasis’ means: standing. FALLING AWAY is the correct translation.  (Hence, Paul telling us to ‘stand fast’ in 1 Cor. 16:13, Gal. 5:1, Phil. 4:1, and 2 Thess. 2:15.)

Lest you doubt me, here are two other confirmations . . .

2. The same Greek word is used in another place in the Bible: Acts 21:21. Here it is translated as ‘forsake’.

‘And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to FORSAKE Moses . . . ‘

IF the word really means ‘catching away’, as some claim, then why is THIS utterly nonsensical?:

‘And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to CATCH AWAY Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.’

FORSAKE is the correct translation.

3. A related word is ‘apostasion‘. This means: divorce.  Again, this reflects the idea of forsaking.

There should be no doubt that ‘apostasia’, in 2 Thessalonians 2:3, is a FALLING AWAY or a FORSAKING of the faith.  Those who say it is proof of a Pretribulation Rapture are engaging in wishful thinking, and are not ‘properly dividing’ the word of God.

ANOMIA

There are two powerful forces at odds today: the antichrist spirit of lawlessness, and the Holy Spirit.  The whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one–even, unfortunately, most of what professes to be ‘The Church’ in the developed world.

If you will examine what lies at the heart of many of the skirmishes, you will see it is rebellion against God’s authority and God’s Law.  Some of the battles are even specifically about removing the Ten Commandments from public places.

The Greek word for lawlessness is ‘anomia’ G458

1) the condition of without law
..a) because ignorant of it
..b) because of violating it
2) contempt and violation of law, iniquity, wickedness

In Greek, ‘law’ is: nomos and ‘without’ is: a-.  Therefore, to express the idea of what we would call ‘lawlessness’, there is no more perfect way to express it in Greek than by the word: ‘anomos’ or ‘anomia’.  Certainly, lawbreaking can also be called wickedness, evil, or sin, but the most perfect translation of the word is ‘lawless’ or ‘lawlessness’.

Where does this word show up in the Bible?  In some very key places:

‘Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (ANOMIA).’  (Matt. 7:22-23)

Interesting–many people that call Jesus Lord and do wonderful works in His name . . . yet practice lawlessness . . . will be rejected on judgment day.  Keep this one in mind.

‘As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity (ANOMIA); And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.’  (Matt. 13:40-42)

Wow, here it is again already . . . tares growing amongst the wheat . . . children of the wicked one amongst the children of God.  He will send His angels to gather all those children of the wicked one, who practice LAWLESSNESS, and they will be cast into a furnace of fire.

‘Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity (ANOMIA)’ (Matt. 23:38)

Another description of the tares.  I’ve seen a lot of those, professing to be ‘Christians’.  It could be why ‘Christianity’ stinks to so many nonbelievers.  After all, today’s mainstream, western ‘Christian’ arrogantly calls sinners ‘sinners’ and tells them they are going to burn in hell . . . yet preaches a gospel that says that the children of God can live any way they please (ANOMIA).

‘And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.  And because iniquity (ANOMIA) shall abound , the love of many shall wax cold .’  (Matt. 24:10-12)

When we start looking specifically at ‘lawlessness’ (as opposed to ‘sin’ or ‘wickedness’) a lot of our key end-times Scriptures pop up, don’t they?  The significance of lawlessness has been hidden in the translations.

‘I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity (ANOMIA) unto iniquity (ANOMIA); even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness’  (Romans 6:19)

As Christians, we are NOT to be lawless people!

‘Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness(ANOMIA)? and what communion hath light with darkness?’  (2 Cor. 6:14)

How can we even claim to be Christians, if we walk in lawlessness?  According to this verse, righteousness has nothing in common with lawlessness.

‘For the mystery of iniquity (ANOMIA) doth already work : only he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way.’  (2 Thess. 2:7)

In this verse, there are no Greek words saying ‘he’ or ‘who’.  It could just as easily be translated as ‘that which’ . . . ‘only that which now letteth’.  What restrains lawlessness?  The law–if people choose to, or are compelled to, obey it.  Which leads us to another end-times passage:

‘Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, [saying], Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.’  (Psalms 2:1-3)

In the end-times, the unsaved world rebels against the Lord and conspires together to cast off His ‘bands and cords’ . . . His restraints . . . His law and moral values . . . which constrain them.  ‘Do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.’  (Allistair Crowley, a famed Satanist and homosexual serial-killer pedophile who called himself ‘the beast’)

This one is a little harder to understand the translation, so I will include the Greek for comparison:

‘Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth (ANOMIA) also the law (ANOMIA) for sin is the transgression of the law (ANOMIA) .’  (1 John 3:4)

‘paV o poiwn thn amartian kai thn anomian poiei kai h amartia estin h anomia’

To use the exact translation of ‘lawlessness’, I would translate it this way:

‘Whosoever committeth sin also lawlessness (ANOMIA) commits, for sin is lawlessness (ANOMIA).’

There is simply no excuse for a Christian to live a sinful lifestyle!!  To live a sinful lifestyle, under the guise of being ‘covered in Christ’s righteousness’ or our actions being ‘under the blood’ is to blaspheme Christ!  The Scriptures tell us that Jesus hated LAWLESSNESS!

‘But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and HATED iniquity (ANOMIA) . . . ‘  (Hebrews 1:8-9)

And that He specifically redeemed us FROM lawlessness, to walk in righteousness!

‘Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity (ANOMIA), and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.’  (Titus 2:14)

Here is a passage that is frequently twisted to justify a Christian being ‘carnal’ (lawless) . . .

‘And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are without law (ANOMOS), as without law (ANOMOS), (being not without law (ANOMOS) to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law (ANOMOS)’  (1 Cor. 9:20-21)

I am not sure how Paul accomplished that–but he says he was NOT without law towards God, but under the law to Christ. I suspect he meant that he lived by the SPIRIT of the Law, but not the LETTER of the Law, in those cases–which is how Gentile Christians are to walk, even now.  In no way does this justify a Christian living without regard for the SPIRIT of the Law and being lawless (ANOMOS)!

Here’s another end-times one, about the Antichrist:

‘And then shall that Wicked (ANOMOS) be revealed , whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:’ (2 Thess. 2:8)

And lastly . . . as many of us can empathize with:

‘And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed [his] righteous soul from day to day with [their] unlawful (ANOMOS) deeds’  (2 Peter 2:7-8)

I have cited 13 of 20 verses that use this word.  That’s 65% of the places where it occurs–and they have significant end-times application!  There are many other places where ‘iniquity’ or ‘wickedness’ are spoken of . . . and many where ‘sin’ is talked about.  (And, as 1 John 3:4 tells us, ALL sin is lawlessness (anomia).)  However, I believe there is a very specific reason that the words ‘anomia’ and ‘anomos’ were used in these passages.  I think when we look around us, we can see why.

We are now living in a time that is not only exceedingly sinful, but a hatred for (righteous) law . . . a rebellion against God’s righteous law . . . is becoming pervasive throughout the world.  This hatred for God’s righteous law is so pointed and specific that it requires very precise wording to convey it.  It is not simply transgression of God’s law–it is REBELLION against it.

It should be no surprise to us that our president specifically chose people who did not pay their taxes to fill positions in his administration . . . or that he chooses to surround himself and give power and prestige to those who display a clear hatred for God’s law . . . or that he is ‘framing mischief by a law’ (changing the laws to legalize sin) and penalizing righteousness.  He is a man of LAWLESSNESS.  He operates in the antichrist spirit of ANOMIA.

It isn’t ‘law’ per se that this spirit opposes, because it does indeed seek to bring everyone into bondage through the Law of Sin and Death.  It comes to steal, kill, and destroy–and apparently to tightly control, to compel people to sin and to approve of sin, and to persecute those who won’t.  It is God’s RIGHTEOUS law that this spirit opposes.  It ‘opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped’.

‘And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.’  (Rev. 12:17)

There is no doubt that we are in the midst of a spiritual war.  What are we to do?

‘Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.’  (Rev. 14:12)

We must stand firm in our resolve.  We must uphold the SPIRIT of God’s law, and keep His commandments, through love and obedience.  We must resist the devil.  And we must trust in our Lord, that the day of judgment IS coming, when He will reward the righteous and destroy the lawless.

‘Who will rise up for me against the transgressors? or who will stand up with me against the workers of iniquity (ANOMIA)? If the Lord had not helped me, my soul had almost sojourned in Hades.  If I said, My foot has been moved; thy mercy, O Lord, helped me. O Lord, according to the multitude of my griefs within my heart, thy consolation have soothed my soul.

Shall the throne of iniquity (ANOMIA) have fellowship with thee, which frames mischief by an ordinance? They will hunt for the soul of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood. But the Lord was my refuge; and my God the helper of my hope. And he will recompense to them their iniquity (ANOMIA) and their wickedness: the Lord our God shall utterly destroy them.’  (Psalm 94:16-23, Greek Septuagint)

‘Woe to them that call evil good, and good evil; who make darkness light, and light darkness; who make bitter sweet, and sweet bitter. Woe to them that are wise in their own conceit, and knowing in their own sight.  Woe to the strong ones of you that drink wine, and the mighty ones that mingle strong drink:  who justify the ungodly for rewards, and take away the righteousness of the righteous.

Therefore as stubble shall be burnt by a coal of fire, and shall be consumed by a violent flame, their root shall be as chaff, and their flower shall go up as dust: for they rejected the law of the Lord of hosts, and insulted the word of the Holy One of Israel.’  (Isaiah 5:20-24, Greek Septuagint)

(For those of you who have not read my other posts, I am NOT involved with the Hebrew Roots movement, and I do NOT believe we are supposed to follow ‘Torah’ (go back under The Law).  I believe we are to follow the Ten Commandments, as OBEDIENCE to God, and EVIDENCE of our commitment to HIm–but NOT for JUSTIFICATION.  We are to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who will lead us to follow the SPIRIT of the Law, rather than the LETTER of the Law.)

Love Is The Answer

Last night, I was praying and pondering these verses:

‘Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.’  (Matthew 7:22-23)

And I wondered . . . how can we be sure He knows us?  Perhaps this is one of those times that God inspired the question.  Ordinarily I would have just though: If we’ve repented, trusted Jesus for salvation, and are living in obedience to Him . . . walking with Him, surely He knows us.  But that was not the answer that God impressed upon me.  Instead, this was:

‘He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.’  (1John 4:8)

And more Scriptures followed:

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.’  (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)

‘If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.’  (1 John 4:20-21)

‘My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.’  (1 John 3:18)

‘If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be [ye] warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what [doth it] profit?’  (James 2:15-16)

‘And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.  And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.  And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.’  (1 John 3:22-24)

The Bible tells us that in the latter days there will be a great falling away.  It also talks about deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons in the end times.  But here is how Jesus described that falling away:

‘And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.’  (Matthew 24:12)

How does iniquity (‘lawlessness’; ‘contempt and violation of law’) cause our love to wax cold?  I’m still waiting for revelation on that.  Could this be part of it though?  One of the reasons for the law, is that we would not trespass against one another.  When people don’t follow the law, they DO trespass against one another, and wound one another.  A lawless society is a ‘me first’ society.  When people are ‘looking out for number one’ they don’t seem to realize, or care, how much they hurt others.

When we are hurt, it can be hard to forgive.  When we are repeatedly ‘trespassed against’, we can get to the place where we HATE people in general, not necessarily even any particular person.  Technically, we may believe we aren’t being unforgiving, or aren’t hating, because we have no particular target in mind.  But when we get to the point where we hate people, our heart is hardened.  Could this be what Jesus was talking about?  Is there any of us who can’t identify with feeling this way?

How do we guard against this?  How do we watch the wretched things people do to one another, and not grow to hate humanity?  This is something that all of us who are living now are going to have to seek God about.  Certainly we must forgive others, AS GOD FORGIVES US (in the midst of our unworthiness), understanding that the debt we owed Him was FAR greater than the debt anyone owes us.  We can also remember Jesus’ words: ‘Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do’.  And we can keep in mind that the whole world lies in darkness and

‘ . . . we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].’  (Ephesians 6:12)

We must guard our heart with all diligence, because if we don’t have love it doesn’t matter WHAT we do, in the end it will profit us nothing.

‘Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it [are] the issues of life.’  (Proverbs 4:23)

It was brought to my attention, that some people who believe in the preTribulation Rapture believe that the ‘falling away’ is really a ‘catching away’.  Apparently they have a different interpretation of this verse:

‘Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;’  (2 Thessalonians 2:3)

(A simple check on the meaning of this term would show that the Greek word is ‘apostasia’.  This means: a falling away, defection, or apostasy.  Even the corrupt Bible versions got this one right, translating it as rebellion, apostasy, or falling away.)

Nevertheless, for those who fail to do their own Bible reading and/or fact checking . . . do you realize what that implies? It implies that anyone who believes this, as long as they are alive, can not believe that anyone who rises to power is actually The Antichrist (because they believe they’ll be Raptured before that happens, right?).

So, what’s going to happen when someone

‘opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God’? (2 Thessalonians 2:4)

We know that God is going to send a strong delusion to those who don’t love the truth (2 Thess. 2:11) . . . and we know that ‘Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.’ (2 Cor. 11:14)  (Also, I have reason to believe that The Tribulation may not be seven years, and will not begin with a seven year peace treaty.) . . .

The churches are already moving to unite with one another, with Catholicism, with Islam, with Eastern occult religions such as yoga, etc. Many have been ‘prophesying’ of a ‘great awakening‘ or a ‘great end-times revival‘ (which isn’t Scriptural!) . . .

We know that The Antichrist’s coming ‘is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders‘ (2 Thess. 2:9) that ‘his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness‘ (2 Cor. 11:15), that ‘there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect (Matthew 24:24). . .

Besides the typical (false) healing ministries by such false apostles as Benny Hinn, we have abominations like the Todd Bentley fiasco, and churches where angels, ‘gold dust’, jewels, and oil are supposedly appearing. People are having dreams, believing that Jesus is appearing to them–but with prayer for discernment, and comparison to God’s Word, these prove to be false. . .

If they ALREADY can’t discern that these things are not of God . . . that they fulfill Jesus’ warnings of end-times deception . . . then just who are they going to suppose that fellow sitting in God’s temple is? (And what new, deceptive teachings or ‘discoveries’ might further prepare the way for him?)

I may be wrong, but when I look at how many people missed the coming of the Messiah (only two were waiting and watching, and recognized Him after He was born) . . . and how the prophecies about Him were fulfilled in ways they did not expect . . . I suspect that The Antichrist could be among us for quite awhile, with very few people recognizing who he is. It MAY even be that we won’t know, unless God reveals it to us.

One other thing that we shouldn’t overlook, is that Satan has to have some plan for quieting, confusing, or explaining away the Scriptures that would allow people to recognize Him. As fast as things are unfolding, it does appear that Bibles may still be obtainable when he comes. Even if they weren’t, enough people remember certain things to be able to identify him at some point.

Certainly marginalizing or getting rid of believers would solve some of that problem–but he wants to appear to be a ‘good guy’, so he’d need to appear to have clean hands in the matter. And, even if he were rid of all Christians, there are bound to be some people who are currently ‘on the fence’ that would remember things they’ve been told, who could ‘out’ him then.

It seems to me that the MOST effective strategy would be to paint a completely different picture–of him, and of how things will happen–so that people will be unaware as it happens right under their noses.

And indeed, I strongly suspect this is already happening–with the help of the false picture that is being presented in the churches of a preTribulation Rapture, and a great end-times revival accompanied by signs and wonders.

READ YOUR BIBLE and PRAY that God will help you understand it and show you the truth, lest you also be deceived!!
