You have to remember that they had to turn the original picture upside-down to get that effect, though. By now those craters are hardly even that distinct any more, due to the eruption melting the ice further.
I think the point people were making is that, before the eruption, the volcano appeared as a spooky looking face. As far as the (aerial) photograph being turned upside down–doesn’t that just mean someone would have had to fly over it in the opposite direction as the photographer did, to see the ‘face’? : )
