Daniel 8:23-25

New International Version

‘“In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a stern-faced king, a master of intrigue*, will arise.

  • 24 He will become very strong, but not by his own power.
  • He will cause astounding devastation and
  • [he] will succeed in whatever he does.
  • He will destroy the mighty men and the holy people.
  • 25 He will cause deceit to prosper,
  • and he will consider himself superior.
  • When they feel secure, he will destroy many and
  • take his stand against the Prince of princes.
  • Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.’

to accomplish or force by crafty plotting or underhand machinations,

An intrigue usually involves duplicity and deceit aimed at achieving either personal advantage or criminal or treasonous objectives

  • And prosper and perform his will;
  • He will destroy mighty men and the holy people.
  • 25 “And through his shrewdness***  He will cause deceit to succeed by his influence;
  • And he will magnify himself in his heart,
  • And he will destroy many while they are at ease.
  • He will even oppose the Prince of princes,
  • But he will be broken without human agency.’

  • His power shall be great, and
  • he shall cause fearful destruction, and
  • shall succeed in what he does, and
  • destroy mighty men and the people of the saints.
  • By his cunning he shall make deceit prosper under his hand, and
  • in his own mind he shall magnify himself.
  • Without warning he shall destroy many; and
  • he shall even rise up against the Prince of princes;
  • but, by no human hand, he shall be broken.’
